I had to hop over the border yesterday to visit a factory in Shenzhen. Before I went back to Hong Kong, I stopped at “Windows of the World” metro. Around eight years ago I lived next to the metro stop and I recall there’s a large shopping mall.
Everyone who’s been to China or is doing business with Chinese companies has heard of WeChat. It’s an application that resides on your smartphone and provides a number of services including chatting (WhatsApp, iMessage), audio and video calling (WhatsApp, FaceTime) but also sharing photos / status updates with your network (Facebook). It’s been a while since I went back to Shenzhen. I pass the city every week but my interaction is limited to leaving the Hong Kong – China border, heading to the train station and taking the train to Dongguan.

Holidays, annual leave, 40 hour weeks, paternity leave “Elternzeit”. All that contributes what we in Europe call the work-life balance.
But how do things look in different parts of the world? Like in Hong Kong where I live.
Over the Easter weekend I flew up to Hangzhou, a city around 200km south of Shanghai to visit a friend of mine. We spent a few days, eating and drinking way too much.
He also took me to Shaoxing – China’s wine city. Before we set of, I though that I heard the name Shaoxing before but I wasn’t able to connect the dots. Finally I did. Around five years ago, while working for a sourcing company, I visited the city, although only the factory belt. I skipped the downtown area completely which is a shame….
If you don’t live in Hong Kong, chances are slim that you heard about what’s happening in Hong Kong. Unless you’re a news junkie that scans CNN, BBC, the New York Times, on a constant basis.

If you’re living in Shanghai or happen to visit the city anytime, don’t miss out on the “Old Shanghai” exhibition on display in the “Shanghai Urban Planning and Exhibition Centre” at People’s Square. I’m not a culture vulture myself, but I was really impressed by the paintings of Hè You Zhí (贺友直).

I recently came across some brilliant illustrations by designer Yang Liu. She has been living in Germany since 1990. When she moved over to Germany she was just 12 years. Old enough to have grown up with Chinese culture and young enough to absorb a new culture. So what are the differences between a Western and Eastern culture?

Few people outside China have heard of Shenzhen. And since Shenzhen, as we know it, is just 30 years old it might not be surprising. Still, Shenzhen is a city unique city in this world. I believe no other city other than Shenzhen has experienced such a rapid development! If you want to appreciate it, you need to compare photos of 1980 and today.
